Study day for teachers and psychotherapists
Coordinated by Alessia Barbagli (Literature Professor) and Elena Monducci
(Psychiatrist)
University of Rome “Sapienza”, Department Italian Institute of OrientalStudies
Free admission
The study day offers the opportunity for dialogue between teachers, educationalists and psychiatrists in regard to the “unwillingness to study” which often characterizes students. Why do some of them seem to lack the curiosity to learn? What is there behind the disinterestedness in studying? Why is it that school work sometimes seems to be shallow and discontinuous? Why is it that sometimes students’ effort suddenly declines drammatically? And why is it that some of them drop out of school?
The speakers will introduce a discussion in order to identify the situations that concern pedagogy and those which instead are a matter for psychiatry.

In the guidelines written in the last decades the treatment of severe mental disorders was based on the use of psychiatric drugs. Psychotherapy was not considered or it was seen as an additional instrument which could guarantee a greater compliance (adhherence) to mediacation and improve patients’ social skills. This kind of treatment has recently undergone changes triggered on the one hand by studies on the long term outcome of pharmacological treatment, and on the other by recent research in the field of neurobiology which shows that psychotherapy can modify the activity of specific brain circuits through epigenetic and neuroplasticity mechanisms.
